Artist’s Statement
“I am by nature and nurture an incurable hunter and assembler of treasure—equal parts archaeologist and artist. I have unearthed artifacts and assembled truths for most of my life, first as an archaeological geologist and later as a freelance science writer and found object artist.
Found objects, often wearing the honest imperfections and intriguing patina of time, provide me with endless inspiration and the perfect medium for exploring personal and societal truths through the assembling of seemingly disparate elements into a unique whole.”
-Janette Schuster
Biography
Janette Schuster works in mixed media, collage, and found objects. The artist’s work crosses lines of assembled sculpture, textiles, use of common objects and semi-precious objects, wearable art, and jewelry.
Schuster’s assemblages are informed by the artist’s study and work in archeological geology, and by her freelance science writing; showing a process of research and method found through her cross-disciplinary career. Through the assembly of “unearthed artifacts and treasures”, Schuster’s work seeks both personal and social truths. The artist finds a narrative of honest imperfection seen through the intrigue of time in the objects she finds and uses.
