An Artist’s Exploration

Canal Street Art Gallery presents: the Judy Hawkins An Artist’s Exploration solo show, open April 19th through June 15th. Join the gallery for 3rd Friday Gallery Night in Historic Downtown Bellows Falls, Vermont, from 5-7pm on April 19th to celebrate and meet the artist. The Judy Hawkins An Artist’s Exploration solo show exhibits new oil paintings by the Westminster West, Vermont, artist. Hawkins begins work on a canvas from the top down, moving quickly and allowing paint drips, and accidental color combinations to guide the painting. The artist lays down thin glazes, building up layers of often brilliant and high contrast color. The process of change each work goes through is important to the artist in that she continually learns. 

“Over the last few years, I have thought about how important it is for me to continually learn something new whenever I put brush and color on canvas. When I paint, I have an internal ‘dialog’ with myself. Each new experience brings a new perspective and vocabulary to my work, not unlike life.” -Judy Hawkins. 

Lovers is an oil painting using washes of color and underglazes to depict tree bark with opaque details of the patterns of lichen, all overlaying the swirling golden leaves. Wetland makes sense of the repetitive and unique patterns in the landscape through the use of bright lime greens and sky blues with transparent dark prussian blues and small rusty orange shapes tying in the horizon. Spirit Trees, the title work for the show, is a bright and misty vision of tree branches, sky, atmosphere, and dense undergrowth. "I have been inspired by the landscapes of Vermont and Texas, and how light, color, and form create a sense of place." -Judy Hawkins.
