Artist’s Statement

“The Deconstructed Earth”

“This series is exploring how the patterns and structures of nature and those of human civilization are forming a new landscape on the surface of this planet.  It asks the question:  Will we as a species recognize our responsibility to become ethical co-creators?

My process for this series is one of ongoing observation and deconstruction.  For nearly a decade I have looked at, downloaded, screenshot, and cataloged satellite images both from NASA and private sources.  The live stream from the International Space Station also provides hours of footage, including some fascinating digital distortion.

Human patterns on the planet are very linear, appearing to digitize the naturally fractionated patterns of nature.  The circle dominates natural creation, from the atomic level to the planetary.  Can we find the harmony we need to sustain our species on this planet, or will we continue to digitize it into discord?”

Biography

MC Noyes is an oil painter known for his work done in direct observation of the landscape, painted with layers of paint applied at once, and said by the artist to be completed in one sitting.  Noyes’s new work is a departure from the artist's known way of working in that it is a studio series, and seemingly not done from direct observation.  This new work may be seen as representational of a landscape, or perhaps pieces or references to something which we may interpret as such; however leaves very few clues for us to decipher what we are seeing.  The work is done with an intention and certainty which seems to be revealing a narrative, a view of somewhere or something which we are expected to understand; yet may be a language we have yet learned or perhaps is still being created.
