Artist’s Statement

“My years working with glass have been a continual exploration inspired both by nature and the vitreous material itself. Whether in the studio with the occasional stray dragonfly, gardening, walking by the river or on our extensive travels , observing the intricacies of nature and my surroundings proves to be a never ending source of inspiration.

When something strikes me of particular interest I allow my mind to wonder and ask myself the simple question “what if?” ....... and how would the qualities of the glass work with this idea?” Then by allowing myself the artistic liberty to try something new based on my own caprice, I often find myself engaged in a new and exciting series of work.”

Biography

Melanie Leppla’s work with the medium of glass is done in observation of the intricacies of nature, intent on pushing the boundaries of the material with the objects she is representing.  Leppla’s “Cairn Series” are done in the cultural tradition of carrying and stacking stones to mark an accomplishment or memorializing a memory.

The artist uses blown glass along with techniques of etching to achieve the textures and patterns of fantasmic glass stones, stacked precariously or arranged in compositions to create monolithic shapes.

Leppla’s work is included in the Museum of American Craft and the Museum of American Glass as well as numerous important private collections.
